What happens to your coins when a state bans sweeps

Short version: operators have generally given a brief redemption window, not an instant wipe - but nothing guarantees one. Sweeptastic gave players until April 30, 2025 to redeem before forfeiting their balance, including non-redeemable Lucky Coins, ahead of its May 1, 2025 shutdown - call it roughly a month's notice (the exact length of the announcement-to-deadline window wasn't independently confirmed day-by-day - verify before quoting a precise figure). No federal or state law requires any notice period at all; each operator sets its own terms in its own T&Cs, and forfeiture of unredeemed Gold Coins and Sweeps Coins is the standard risk when a brand exits a state or closes entirely. Practical takeaway for this page: if your state passes a ban, or a brand announces it's leaving, redeem what you can immediately rather than waiting on a grace period that isn't promised anywhere. Is it legal in Texas?
Yes - Texas has no sweepstakes-casino ban. SB 517 failed in 2025 (watch 2027). All 30 ranked brands except a handful of self-excluders accept TX players - see the Texas state page.
What happens to my balance if my state bans them?
Most statutes target operators rather than players - but Louisiana is now an exception. Act 182 amended R.S. 14:90.3(D) so that "any client", meaning anyone physically in the state placing gambling-by-computer wagers, faces a fine of up to $500, up to six months, or both. We read the enrolled text ourselves: what the Louisiana law actually says about players. On balances: operators generally announce redemption windows before exit dates, but no law requires one. Redeem early; don't wait for the deadline.
Can I use a VPN?
No. It breaks every operator's terms and risks confiscation of your balance at redemption, when identity and location are verified. We say this plainly because it's the most expensive mistake players make.
Do sweepstakes casinos report winnings to the IRS?
Yes - prize winnings are taxable income regardless of the amount. Operators may issue a 1099-MISC at $600+, but you owe tax either way. Our redemption limits and taxes guide covers the mechanics.
