Quotable verdict: Free-to-play still carries real risk - Gold Coins cost nothing to hold, but every purchase behind them is a genuine dollar, and the tools to control that spending exist at every brand we recommend.

"It's not real money" is the most common thing said about this category, and it's only half true. Gold Coins have no cash value, correct. The dollars you spend buying them are exactly as real as they'd be anywhere else, and the psychological mechanics - variable rewards, one-tap purchases, a next-spin feeling that's always just out of reach - don't care what the coins are called. We built this page as the sitewide home for every responsible-play resource we maintain, and it's a rating criterion in our 12-criteria methodology, not a page we published once to check a compliance box.

The four tools every serious operator offers

Purchase (deposit) limits. A cap on how much you can spend on Gold Coins within a set window - daily, weekly, or monthly. Lowering a limit takes effect immediately. Raising one doesn't: expect a mandatory 24 to 72 hour cooling-off period before a higher limit actually applies, an industry-standard safeguard against raising your own ceiling in the heat of a session.

Session limits and activity reminders. A cap on total time played, plus periodic "are you still there, and do you want to keep going" check-ins during a long session.

Cool-off periods (sometimes called "time-outs"). A short self-imposed suspension, typically 1 to 30 days. Your account stays visible; play and purchases are blocked for the window you choose.

Self-exclusion. The most serious tool, and the one to treat carefully before requesting it: a 6-month minimum, generally irreversible once the period starts, and it does not carry across operators - you have to request it separately, brand by brand, at every casino you've played. It's the right tool when a cool-off isn't enough, and it's built to be a hard stop rather than something you can talk yourself out of a week in.

Every review we publish scores Responsible Gaming as one of twelve weighted criteria, and every brand on our full rankings is checked against this same taxonomy, not graded on a curve.

Which brands let you do this yourself, and which require support

This is a meaningful UX difference, and we treat it as one. Some operators put all four tools in your account settings, where you can adjust them yourself in a couple of minutes. Others require you to contact support directly and ask.

Access model Brands
Self-serve (in-account controls) McLuck, Mega Bonanza, Legendz
Support-required (email or live chat) Crown Coins Casino, LuckyLand Slots, Play Fame, Jackpota

If your brand isn't listed above, check its help center for a section usually labeled "Responsible Play," "Player Trust & Safety," or similar - and if you can't find one within a couple of minutes of looking, contact support directly and ask them to point you to it. Our responsible play guide walks through both access patterns step by step, including exactly what to say to support if you're in the request-required group.

Where to get help

  • 1-800-GAMBLER - call or text. The most widely recognized national number.
  • National Council on Problem Gambling - 1-800-522-4700. NCPG's longtime number, still live and staffed. NCPG has more recently begun leading with a rebranded line, 1-800-MY-RESET (1-800-697-3738) - both numbers currently reach the same organization; we list both so neither reads as a dead reference.
  • Gamblers Anonymous (gamblersanonymous.org) - in-person and virtual peer support meetings.
  • Gam-Anon (gam-anon.org) - support for the friends and family of someone whose gambling is affecting them, not the player.
  • GamTalk (gamtalk.org) - a free, confidential online peer community.

None of these require you to have lost a specific amount first, or to be certain something is actually wrong. They're built for the uncertain stage too.

Our commitments

21+ is our default across all marketing and creative, even in states where 18+ would be legally sufficient. We never use "guaranteed win" language, on this site or in anything we'd write about a brand. Every review carries a Responsible Gaming score as one of twelve published criteria, not a footnote, and this page's link sits in the footer of every page on the site - not filed away where only a search would find it. If a brand's own RG tooling is genuinely weak, we say so in the review directly, the same way we'd flag a slow redemption or a legal risk.

21+ (some operators accept 18+ where state law allows). This page is educational, not a substitute for professional treatment. If gambling has stopped being fun, call or text 1-800-GAMBLER, or call 1-800-522-4700 (NCPG).

FAQ

Can I undo a self-exclusion once it's started?

Generally, no. Self-exclusion is designed to be irreversible for its minimum period - typically 6 months - specifically so it can't be reversed in a moment of wanting back in.

Does self-exclusion at one casino cover the others I play at?

No. It's per-operator only. If you play at more than one brand, you need to request self-exclusion separately at each one.

What happens if I open a new account during self-exclusion?

It violates that operator's terms of service and is generally treated as grounds for a permanent ban, on top of whatever prompted the original exclusion. The tool is built to be a genuine stop, not a pause you can route around with a new email address.

What are the actual warning signs to watch for?

Spending more than you decided in advance, especially right after a loss; losing track of how much time a session actually took; chasing a previous loss rather than playing because you want to; and hiding how much you're spending from someone you'd normally tell. Our responsible play guide turns these into a real self-check rather than a list to skim past.
