Novig Ends Sweepstakes: Novig Cash Converted to USD

Novig has retired Novig Cash and Novig Coins, converted leftover Novig Cash balances into US dollars, and now runs a real-money exchange you have to fund before you can place a trade - and the only part of that it announced was the new product.

We read Novig's own pages on August 8. The help centre says both currencies are gone. The marketing site, on the same morning, still sells them.

When did Novig retire Novig Cash?

Novig announced the replacement and not the removal. On August 4 it put out a national press release, Novig Launches Nationwide, announcing the federally regulated exchange. That release does not contain the words Novig Cash, Novig Coins or sweepstakes, and says nothing about what happened to a balance. Trade coverage the same day drew the conclusion the release left out: RotoWire wrote that the sweepstakes platform "has now been shuttered as Novig moves into the federally regulated prediction market space."

So the switch has a public date, August 4, and the coin product does not. There is still no notice of the retirement, no stated closing date and no message to account holders anywhere on Novig's own site that we could find. The documentary record brackets it the same way: the Internet Archive holds both of Novig's sweepstakes-era legal documents alive on July 31, and both are dead now.

That is the whole of the public record. August 4 is a published date for the product that replaced the coins; it is not a published date for the coins ending, and we do not assert one, because Novig has not.

What happened to Novig Cash and Novig Coins?

Novig's "What is Novig?" article, stamped as updated this week, answers it in one line: "Both currencies are retired; all activity now runs through a single real-money account. Any remaining Novig Cash balance was converted to USD, and your account balance now shows in USD."

The same page kills the free-entry structure that made this a sweepstakes product at all. Asked whether you need to fund an account, Novig now says: "Yes. Trading on Novig uses real money. You'll need to deposit funds before placing your first trade."

No purchase necessary was the entire legal basis of the old product. It is no longer there.

What replaced Novig's sweepstakes model?

A CFTC-regulated exchange. Novig describes itself as "a CFTC-regulated prediction market for sports" where you buy and sell event contracts priced between $0 and $1, and says it "operates under federal commodities law, regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), rather than under state sweepstakes or sports betting law."

The money mechanics changed with it.

One genuine improvement for anyone holding a balance: Novig now says deposited funds carry "no playthrough requirement" and that "the balance in your account is simply your money, available whenever you want it," subject to identity verification and any funds locked in open positions. Why does Novig's own site still advertise sweeps play?

We can't tell you, and that is the part players should be annoyed about.

The homepage we fetched on August 8, and again on August 9, still carries a block headed "Two Ways to Play," sitting under a "FREE TO PLAY" label: "Sharpen your skills with Novig Coins and redeem real prizes with Novig Cash." A panel underneath reads "Play with Novig Cash, which can be redeemed for real cash prizes." Neither currency exists any more, and nothing on Novig is free to play. Novig's own newsroom carries the same thing at greater length, in a launch post under the CEO's byline that tells a new user "the Novig app has two modes: Novig Coins and Novig Cash," and promises 1,000 Coins and 5 Cash preloaded on signup.

The footer is worse. Three of its five legal links are dead. "Terms of Use," "Sweepstakes Rules" and "Privacy Policy" all land on "Uh oh. That page doesn't exist." The Internet Archive captured the first two alive within eleven seconds of each other at 18:09 UTC on July 31: Terms of Use v4.0, dated May 5, 2026, and Sweepstakes Rules v2.7. Both name Novig Sweeps, LLC, the sweepstakes entity, as the contracting party. Novig's own compliance article still tells you where to find them: "Both documents are available in the Help Center under the Policies collection." They are not. That collection holds twelve documents now, and the governing ones are the Ludlow Exchange rulebook, member agreement and privacy policy.

If you download the app this weekend because the homepage promised free coin play, what you'll meet is a 21+ deposit-funded derivatives exchange with mandatory KYC.

Can I use Novig in a state that banned sweepstakes casinos?

Novig says it is "available nationwide, with the exception of Nevada, Arizona, and Michigan," and that eligibility follows your physical location at the time you trade, not your billing address or residency. So the exchange is open in states where dual-currency coin play is not, including Louisiana, Tennessee and New York.

Do not read that as a sweepstakes workaround. It is a different product under a different body of law, and whether states can shut it down is the live question: Novig's subsidiary asked a New York federal court for emergency relief on August 6, and the same preemption argument has already lost in New York and, this month, in Utah and Michigan - Michigan being one of the three states Novig blocks by choice.

Did we get our earlier Novig coverage wrong?

One of our headlines was wrong, and it has now been corrected rather than left flagged. Our August 5 piece ran as "Novig Sues New York, Keeps Sweeps Coins and CFTC License". Novig has not kept the sweeps coins. That headline, and the present tense in our August 5 and August 7 pieces, came from the complaint itself: filed August 5, it says "Novig, Inc. has continued to operate this offering under state oversight." Novig's help centre contradicts its own filing. The August 5 piece now runs as "Novig Sues New York After Winning a CFTC Exchange License", and dated corrections have gone onto it, onto our report that Novig sued Massachusetts, Washington and New Mexico, and onto our report of its New York emergency application. None of the underlying filings changed; our reading of them did.

Does this change anything for the sweeps casinos we rank?

Not directly. Novig has never been on our ranked list, and no operator we track has announced anything like it. The closest brand in shape is Legendz, the sweepstakes sportsbook, which has said nothing about a federal exchange.

What it shows is a third exit route. The first was closing outright, as with the LuckyLand Slots shutdown. The second was pulling out state by state. This is the third: keep the brand, drop the coins, re-file under federal commodities law. Whether it holds depends on courts that have so far said no.

Every Novig page quoted here was fetched on August 8, 2026, and every quotation is verbatim from the page as served that morning; the homepage and the newsroom launch post were re-read on August 9 and are unchanged. The August 4 press release was read on the wire that carries it, and the description of the sweepstakes platform as shuttered is RotoWire's, published the same day, not Novig's own wording. The 404s on the Sweepstakes Rules, Terms of Use and Privacy Policy articles were checked directly, and all three are still linked from the live homepage footer.
